Helping Hand for Kindle Newbies

This blog page is set up primarily to help Kindle Newbies and contains links and info to blog posts which will help you get to grips with the Kindle. I do keep this page updated and add to it as time goes on.

1) 17 Things to Love about Your Kindle!

If you don't yet have a Kindle, this post will give you a list of 17 things you're missing out on! 17 Things to Love about Kindles
AND for a more balanced view of whether the Kindle is right for you, see the post on Things NOT to Love About Your Kindle! What's Not to Love about Kindles?

2) Which Kindle is Right for You?

Which model is right for you? Having trouble deciding which device to get? Refer to my Kindle Comparison Charts and info.

If you're concerned about whether to get a wifi-only or a 3G + Wifi Kindle, then here's a post which goes into the pros and cons of 3G for you. 3G or Not?

3) While Waiting for Your New Kindle ...

Why not get a head start by reading through the Kindle documentation?

US Kindle Documentation (U.S. and other countries)

At these sites, you can download a quick start guide and a user guide in either a .pdf (readable on a PC) or AZW format which is for reading on your Kindle!

If you've never owned a Kindle and especially if you've never had an ereading device before, it's a good idea to read these documents. For one, it means you won't be stuck when you finally get your Kindle and you'll have a good idea on how to operate it.

You may also want to check out Kindle for PC (or another Kindle reading app) so you can make a start on buying and reading books from Amazon. There is also a Kindle for Mac, Kindle for iPhone/iPad and Kindle for Android phone.

4) Protect your New Kindle with a Cover

A fairly solid case is a good idea - even if you don't want to use it while you read. The screen on any e-ink device is vulnerable to hard knocks and under any strong pressure it can break. Do be careful to ensure you buy the right cover for your specific Kindle model.

5) Should you Put Lots of Books on Your Kindle or Not?

Before you rush off and start dumping hundreds of books on your e-ink Kindle, have a look at the pros and cons of storing lots of books on your device. Kindle Books on Device

6) Why is my new Kindle battery running down so fast?

E-ink Kindle battery life should be extremely good but there are reasons why it might run down faster than you expect. Kindle Battery Questions.

7) Where can you get eBooks from apart from Amazon?

Pay a visit to my Kindle Books on a Budget page which lists lots of sources.

8) Organizing Your Growing eBook Library

Calibre is a free and highly respected piece of computer software for managing your ebook library - not just for Kindles. If you are interested in collecting books from other sources and not just from Amazon, then you should definitely look into Calibre.

9) If Something Goes Wrong with Your Kindle

Kindle devices are normally pretty stable. Doing a restart can often help to iron out little glitches - select Menu / Settings / Press Menu again and select Restart.

If the screen freezes, you'll need to try a Reset using the Power Button.

If you cannot fix it, do ask for help at one of the following active forums where someone is very likely to help  you and quickly. Please don't contact me personally for help.
